….so read a line written in the notes at the bottom of the uniform list for the all boys secondary school I attended in the late 1980s. Another requirement was to bring a towel on those days.

“PE” stood for physical education and this was a weekly one hour long session for each class which took place in the school gym or swimming pool, on the sports fields or in the area outside the school grounds.

Further up the uniform list was given the items that were to be worn: T-shirt, shorts, socks and trainers, all had to be white. The items had to be bought from the official school uniform stockist which was in the local area.

We changed for PE in a changing room which was located between the gym and the pool, with a separate entrance leading out to the sports fields.

The first PE class in every academic year was a physical assessment which was in three parts (1) general fitness, (2) swimming ability, and (3) stamina.

Part (1) involve each of us running point-to-point, climbing wall bars, attempting a rope climb and a timed assault course involving running along beams, rope swings, crawling through hoops, carrying objects, somersaults and jumping over a vaulting horse.

Part (2) followed immediately afterwards, with us told to swim a length of the pool in any stroke they wanted, and then tread water at the deep end for five minutes. Those who could not swim were told to lower themselves into the shallow end of the pool up to their necks.

Next was part (3) which was running five circuits around the furthest parts of the sports fields. The slowest half of the class had to repeat parts (2) and (3) the following week.

All three parts had to be undertaken in full PE uniform which explained the need for the spare change of underwear. Part (2) was possibly the most difficult section because we still had our trainers on. For part (3) our clothes were clinging to us and, because this was the 1980s, our shorts were made of nylon so what was being worn underneath was fully revealed.

I always looked forward to this annual activity. This sort of thing would probably not happen today.
