The one time in my life I have been stopped for speeding was when I was on my way back from a sneaky outdoor fully clothed swim!

I had driven to a place I know where there is a nice pond. It's in the countryside, just outside the town where I live. During the daytime, there are a few dog-walkers on a nearby path, but I knew that, at night, the place would be deserted. It was. I had a lovely time in my jeans, t-shirt, socks and shoes.

Once I was done, I changed into dry clothes and put the wet ones in a bin-liner in the boot of my car, and started driving home. It was a journey of about 20 minutes.

Then, I got pulled over my a traffic cop with a handheld camera. This was quite a few years ago, but I think I was doing about 45mph on a 30mph road. Whatever it was, it was about 2 mph too fast for me to be offered a "speed awareness" course. (As an aside, I still maintain that my speed would have passed the common-sense test. It was a straight 50mph road which had a short section of 30mph limit as it passed some houses. The road, with very good visibility, was separated from the houses by a strip of grass and a very wide footpath so there was probably a good 30-50 feet between the road and the nearest potential pedestrian, of which there were none about, on account of it being about 11:30pm. The road has a central barrier so there was equally no chance of anyone coming on to the road from the other side. The weather was dry with good visibility. The cops had basically set up an entrapment at this spot and were flagging down a continuous stream of motorists.)

They pulled me over. One policeman checked my licence and details, while the other talked to me. He asked why I was speeding. By this point, I knew that they had their evidence, so there was no point lying about it. I just said that I knew I was going too fast, but it was a very wide road with no-one about and I thought it was safe. The policeman said "what if a child ran out from one of those houses?" What I actually thought at that point was, that's ridiculous: a) Its very unlikely that a child young enough to be unaware of the danger of the road would be out at that time of night, and b) even if they were, I would still have had loads of time to spot them and brake in time, because of how far the houses were from the street itself. However, I didn't want to antagonise the policeman, so I just shut myself up.

The policeman asked me where I was going? What was I doing out? That shook me a little. I didn't want to give him reason for any further questions, so I just said I needed to go for a drive, to clear my mind. He didn't question me on that, but he did look at me a little suspiciously. He asked me to get out of the car, which I did, and then to open the boot, which I did. At this point, I was crapping myself, because I really didn't want to have to explain the real reason there were wet clothes in the boot and I couldn't think of a believable made-up story to explain them. Then he asked what's in the bag? I said "clothes". "Show me" he said. I opened the bag and he took a look. I guess he couldn't see anything unusual in there. Maybe they didn't look wet. Maybe he didn't care. But he left it at that. I breathed a sigh of relief and was, frankly, happy to get away with my 3 points!

(Writing this up, I should point out to any US-based readers, that the relationship between the police and the motoring public here is probably much better than the equivalent in the US. Traffic cops don't have guns and most people would not have any issue with complying with a request to get out of the car, unless they genuinely had something to hide, of course.)
