I remembered a funny story about Huey Long. On the negative side, he was notoriously corrupt. I sometimes think he was the inspiration for the Boss Hogg character. He was doubtless a very clever politician, however, who seldom let an opportunity go to waste.

One day after a heavy rain he was standing next to a road, and a car went past and splashed mud on his suit. He said to onlookers who had witnessed this, "Just you wait! When I'm governor, I'm gonna pave these roads!" On this issue Long was as good as his word, and many of Louisiana's roads were paved during his administration.
