You might want to read a short story called "The Necklace." A woman borrows a diamond necklace from a friend to wear to a ball. When she arrives home she discovers the necklace is gone. She is in a panic and doesn't know what to do. She and her husband go to various jewelry shops to find a diamond necklace that looks like the one that was lost and finally locate one and are able to purchase it on credit. The wife puts it in the box and returns it to her friend, who doesn't look at it. The wife and her husband work ten years to pay off the cost of the necklace, making enormous sacrifices and doing jobs of drudgery. The young wife has turned into an old, hagard woman before her time. One day she meets the lady she borrowed the necklace from in the street and decides to go to her and tell her what had really happened. Her friend does not recognize her at first she has changed so. But now that the necklace has been paid for she figures she can tell her the truth. After hearing the story the friend is shocked. She tells the wife the diamonds were fake and worth a fraction of what the real genuine diamond cost. She could have spared her husband and herself a lot of grief if she had just gone to her friend and been honest in the first place.
