That is typical swimwear for that part of Europe.
I guess you were on some sort of tour where it could be difficult moving wet clothes between hotels. I have done road trips where I have used some nylon cord to put up a washing line in the back of the car for both laundry and swimming clothes. Something you can't do on a tour bus.
