Being a shy introverted guy (altough it improved over the years), I'm like that too. I don't like at all having an audience when I try to do something, especially when it's swimming fully clothed.
I think I only did it once last year in a lake, but it was quite private. I was there with some friends (we were volunteers for an event, and we were there earlier) and the swim wasn't planned at all.
